I have suffered many years with agonizing eczema on my neck and shoulder, 15 years or more. I can't tell you how it affects your life... or maybe you know!

Eczema can be beaten but the path to freedom is different for everyone. Here is what worked for me just this last year.

It’s a total body approach, and I’m not exactly sure what my turning point was, but I think greens superfood played a large part. Greens are not the tastiest thing on the planet but done right I couldn’t even taste greens in my smoothies, or just take greens straight with water. My Vitamix was also a big part of getting well, and I still use it once or twice a day.

I like these greens brands as they aren’t full of binders and fillers; Trophic Greens Concentrate , Whole Greens, Amazing Grass . Take it slow at first as your Eczema can get worse at first, then as things improve, build to the recommended serving. Look for greens brands low in fillers, some are half full of things like flax powder and/or lecithin, which are good, but are inexpensive by themselves. Other healthy supplement to build you body are things like, chai seeds, fish oils and hemp protein. Getting healthy isn't cheap but a small price to pay for feeling good!

Food allergys are a common problem and I think the foods I reacted to over the years changed, so rotating the foods I ate every 3 or 4 days helped. Drink lots of water (8 glasses minimum a day), get lots of fibre (25 g per day), eats lots of fruit and vegetables. Get the sugar (my vice) out of your diet! We eat too many acid foods, is your ph balance is off? Research acid/alkaline foods. Once your eczema is under control enjoy all foods, but the key is moderation. I don’t think eczema ever totally goes away as I sometimes feel a spot coming up and realize it’s time to smarten up.

Even though I don’t believe creams are the solution to the source of the problem (and I have tried many), one that is amazing and helped me a lot is Sulforaphane. Very expensive but remarkable stuff. Some others that I think helped are Broody Chick Diaper Cream and Gardner’s Dream Cream. Cortizone creams and Immune Deppressant creams can be part of your treatment but they MUST NOT be considered the solution as they don't treat the source of the problem. If you do use them, the longer you take a break between cycles makes a big difference as they loose thier effectiveness with constant use.

I can't tell you how nice it is not to itch and scratch all the time, not to mention not worrying about covering up!

I'm constantly amazed with the technology we take for granted! Something as simple as driving up island at 110km/h in the air conditioned comfort of my Honda Civic listening to my MP3's, was impossible 100 years ago!

My amazing little printer, the Cannon Mf4150, prints scans and copies. Something I do every day, but really is a miracle!

In the timeline of the history of the planet nearly EVERYTHING we surround ourselves with did not even exist 125 years or so ago!

The TD Back recently pulished an interesting article on after tax income. It found Canadians after tax income has only risen 3.6% from 1989 to 2004, while the economy grew 22% over the same period!
The paper points to the growing number of women in the workplace (a 20% increase from 1970's to 2004), which indicates some familys are coping by having both spouse working. So why has income not kept up? Ya think climbing taxes and CPP premiums tripling might have something to do with it?
It wouldn't be so bad if we at least got some value for our tax burden, but instead spending has been eaten up by interest and debt reduction to the tune of 14 cents of every tax dollar!

A 767 flying from New York to San Francisco uses 7,400 gallons of jet fuel! That's a third of a mile per gallon! Now figure 200 people on board, that's 37 gallons per person. Funny little thing today. I was driving home from up island at 10km/h under the speed limit (I find that's the best economy), when I looked in my mirror and saw a cop right on my ass. I will admit I did jump a bit at first, but then just went back to sleep driving like I was.

Now I'm pretty used to people passing me on the island highway because I'm driving slower than the speed limit, but why are people scared to pass a police car if he is traveling slower than the posted speed? It was actually pretty funny to see a dozen or so cars in two lanes of traffic behind me... usually I'm the one in behind! What's the big deal to pass Mr. Policeman if your not going over the limit? Do people have a guilty conscience? Or just chicken? It was even more amusing after the cop took an exit and everyone blew by me and I found myself all alone again!

Been working too much, so time to retire from trucking for a while. Back in 2000, I thought it would be a good idea to diversify, so I spent my $2200 and actually got my class 1 drivers! I recommend getting a commercial license for anyone who likes driving. It seems there is always a demand for good truck drivers. If I can do it anyone can! I guess there could be worse things to blow 2 grand on? Best 2K I spent!

10 years was long enough to fight with the wood stove!
Loved the heat but not the work. Bring in the wood, put a log on, clean the chimney, chop the kindling, take out the ash, yada yada... not to mention the dust.

Our Enviro pellet stove has quiet motors, is self igniting, and I only bring in a bag every day or so. Taking some getting used to as it feels like were not living in the tropics anymore! It does have some weekly maintenance, but so far so good.

Electric - yuck, cold and expensive

Wood - nice but too much work

Gas - got it and expensive

Oil Furnace - gotta have ducting for dat

Pellet Stove - ahhhh, best trade off

Move to Mexico - I wish!

Just think we burned 4 cords a year, thats 40 cords over 10 years. So that means I packed 40 cords into the house in my banana box, and then put the firewood in another black box and it went up the chimney!!! I wonder how many logging trucks that is?

Pinnacle Pellet Wood pellet fuel is CO2 neutral, no net negative impact towards greenhouse gas and is a totally renewable resource!

Lotto fever in Canada! Our biggest jackpot so far a few weeks ago... 40 million. I hardly ever buy tickets, but I did for this one. I know the odds are better for a 747 to crash on me and smear me into the ground, but the dreaming is much more fun if you have a ticket... no? We all have our dreams and ways we would spend our fortune, but I think the reality would not be what we expected! The biggest shocker for most people would be having to drop off the face of the earth. If you didn't, you had better get used to answering the phone and the door... alot!!! OMG the people that would come out of the woodwork!
Just for fun I did the following math;

40,000,000 -that's a lot of zero's
10% interest -if you can't get at least that return your in trouble

Sounds like work to spend that much every day.

Why didn't I get one years ago? Been all over the Island so far... Sayward, Port Alberni, Lake Cowichan, and everywhere in between. Yes even had my first road bike spill. I was making a turn onto Rosstown from Bowen with Shelby on the back, and hit a large patch of oil that had been there a while and blended in with the color of the pavement. Nothing I could have done to prevent it. Luckily there were no cars coming as we slid accross the two lanes of oncoming traffic. Neither of us were hurt, and no ripped clothes as the oil greased our slide. Bike got dingged up a bit, but hey it's not like it brand new! Phoned the police and they had the road sanded within half an hour... impressive!
Now I've got one, don't think I'll be without.

They say we remember only the really good or really bad things in our life. The mediocre humdrum events just don't stick, and why should they? I think I have to agree, especially when it comes to remembering average movies... or maybe its just old age. When someone asks you to name your most favourite movies, its' pretty easy to rattle off your top ten, or bottom ten for that matter! If you are asked about what movies were just okay, you have to stop and think about it (or unless you've watched just about any new release). So the problem is your trying to decide what movie to watch one night, and you think have I seen this or that movie before?? Did I like it? Was it worth watching again? Solution IMDb to the rescue! What the heck is IMDb you ask? Internet Movie Database of course!
I stumbled on this website a few years ago and although its not my home page, I sure seem to spend a lot of time there. IMDb is a great movie resource to keep track of movies you have watched, or help decide what you want to see. In my IMDb personal online movie database, I have scored over 1000 movies now, so no more bad movies twice. Want to see what everyone else thinks of a particular movie? Head to IMDb and you can see any movie's overall rating by thousands of other people who have voted, and you can also see demographically by age and sex who likes what. No more accidental chick flicks for me, only the ones my wife makes me watch!
It doesn't stop there though, if you want just about any other movie resource this is the place to go. From goofs to movie production costs its all there, they even have IMDb University in their help section to help you get going. If your a movie buff like me there is not much to not like about IMDb, and its free too! If your in the movie industry and want even more depth they have a pro version, but it is a paid service. I find the basic free one is just great, and with Cut & Print for my editorial all I have to do it put on the popcorn machine!

MORRO BAY, Calif (AP) Dismissing old age as a myth, Jack LaLanne, TV's first fitness guru, says old folks should get out of their easy chairs and "work at living." At 89, he hits the gym every day at 5am, lifts weights and swims for two hours. "The only way you hurt your body is not using it. That's the killer: inactivity, " LaLanne said recently at his home on the central California coast. "Sitting around on your big fat butt and thinking about the good old days. You've got to work at living. Take care of the most important thing in your life - your body."
LaLanne hosted a TV exercise show for 34 years. Dressed modestly in black, he directed North America's house wives from 1951-85 in the proper form for sit-ups and push-ups to the accompaniment of organ music, not disco aerobic tunes. Sometimes he did outrageous stunts to show off his physical prowess. In 1956, the then 42 year old performed 1,033 push-ups in 23 minutes on the TV show You Asked For It. At age 70, he towed boats while swimming across Long Beach Harbor handcuffed. When LaLanne was in his 20s, he weighed 174 pounds.
Today, he weighs just 150, and still has a strapping torso and slim waist. "I feel great," he said "My endurance is terrific. Can't you see my wife smiling all the time?"
"You have to do muscle work, you got to do flexibility, you got to do some cardiovascular," LaLanne said. "That's the key." He encourages people who are feeling old and tired to revitalize their bodies by eating and exercising properly. The human body has more than 600 muscles, and he believes they all need their share of work He suggests focusing on different muscle groups at different points in a workout schedule, so that the routine doesn't become too dull. "Everybody does the same thing year after year after year your muscle gets used to it, you get bored," LaLanne said.
He acknowledges the average person doesn't have the time to exercise two hours per day, so he recommends 30 minute workouts, three to four times a week, and changing one's routine every two to three weeks.

LaLanne's tips for longevity

Exercise 30 minutes a day, three to four times a week. Change your routine every two to three weeks.
Set short-term fitness goals and follow through.
Slowly change a few bad habits by starting good habits. For example, replace white bread with whole wheat bread or start eating fresh fruit for desserts instead of sweets.
Eat foods in their natural states and in as many varieties as you can.
Pass on caffeine, sugar and cigarettes.
Drink plenty of water.

Why Be Healthy?

Well I figure this is the perfect time of year for a few thoughts on being healthy, I know I did my fair share of overindulgence! I haven't always been "into" health food (mind you I think its about balance). I used to walk by the health food stores and think ahh who needs that stuff... you know 10 feet tall and bullet proof, haha. Happened quite innocently enough, I was at work sitting in the coffee room quite bored, and saw a copy of Jay Kordich "Power of Juicing". Now I admit he is maybe a bit off the wall, but what he had to say made sense to me, and here I am 15 years later selling the stuff! Its' not just about longevity but being fit along the way.
I guess what really sums it up for me is a seminar I went to put on by Spectrum Naturals. Three things that the speaker said, that to this day have stuck with me...
1) Excersice - doh we all know this, but did you know its better to eat junk food and excercise than eat health and do nothing!
2) Eat Sunshine - huh what are you talking about? Eat live foods that are minimally processed. live foods = live bodies, dead foods = dead bodies
3) Get the parasites out. Everyone's got em, do a parasite cleans once or twice a year.
Of course this is one of those times when, "do what I say not what I do", really applies... maybe ignorance is bliss!!

Embarrassing and true story that happened to me back in my Thrifty days. One normal boring morning when I was receiver at Thrifty's, our warehouse delivery truck was just leaving and I noticed that driver had forgotten the mail bag.

Now to follow this story you have to understand a bit how a semi truck with barn doors loads. What I mean by "barn doors", are the two doors that open out on semi trailers. In order for the truck to unload, the driver opens the doors and then backs up to the loading dock, and visa versa when leaving.

Anyhow driver had pulled off the dock and had closed one door, when I ran out and climbed in to put in the forgotten mail bag. Now I thought he had seen me, but when I turned around to hop out the second door slammed in my face! We used to joke around a lot so I figured Grant was just playing with me and I didn't bang on the door or get too excited. There I was standing there in the dark and cold (yes it was a refer truck too!) , and thinking oh yeah you got me, jokes over.... when truck started to move!! Still not panicking I'm thinking okay he's really burning me and gonna drive around the block, no big deal. Quite quickly I realized that we were heading for the highway and next stop over an hour away! Panic!!! Being the truck was over two thirds full and I was near the back of the trailer well over 50ft from the driver in the cab, I figured my only chance was to bang on trailer at one of the stop lights in town before he hit the highway. Guess what... rotten luck all green lights. Agghhhh. Finally a red light and Lawrence is bouncing off the walls trying to rock the trailer, yes still pitch black and cold. Hehe.

Were moving again, oh no, but then we are stopped. Wait, wait, wait... door opens and daylight. The driver standing there with look of astonishment, "what the heck are you doing he says?" I'm outa there in a flash and we are both having a good laugh by the side of the road 8-) Okay now what, I guess I have to drive you back Grant says? No this had gone far enough, I'll just hitch a ride.

Meanwhile back at the store, Lawrence is nowhere to be found and the back receiving door is wide open. Eventually I get a ride from a curious driver who found my story quite amusing! Sheepishly I make an appearance and do a little explaining. I did get somewhat lucky as I never made the chain newsletter, and the story only spread a bit, but there are still a few old timers around who make sure I never forget.

Wicked Pesto

Why Wickedpesto you ask? Because I make wicked pesto of course!
Want to drive your friends and family away? Do you like to spend time alone? Just try my pesto!

2-3 cups basil (not dried, Bill, the fresh stuff)
6-8 FRESH LARGE garlic cloves
1/2 cup extra virgin olive oil (I also add couple of tablespoons butter)
1/4 cup pine nuts (sub cashews if you like)
1/2 cup parmesan

Blend in blender untill smooth, and just dribble on your favorite pasta (maybe with some chicken or?) ENJOY! NO cooking.
A few notes; 100 grams of fresh basil equals about 3 cups. Add a bit of parsley or cilantro for variety. Spectrum Olive Oil is the best. Fresh garlic way better than dead stuff from grocery store. I freeze unused pesto in ice cube trays for easy use. Many variations on this recipe, but this is my fav.

If you don't want the antisocial part, feed to friends too, then no one notices garlic breath!

Nature's Fireworks

Quite a lightening storm Friday night. Really loud and close... chain lightening too, not like the sheet lightening we normally get. 2am I went outside to watch the "show" and there was a huge strike up on the bluff looking towards Mt Benson, only about half a kilometer away. I wanted to go up there but it was really raining (and dark). I could see the spot where the lightening stuck and it was glowing through the trees like white hot metal. Blew my mind, especially the way the whole sky around the strike was lit up and glowed for a minute before dissipating. Shelby and I went up there the next morning to find the hit, and I think it was a dead arbutus tree. It just split it a bit, and burned it, not quite the damage I expected. It's possible it wasn't that tree at all, but I looked and looked and that was all we could find. 98% sure we were in the right area as I could look back to our house and orientated the location. I guess I just expected to see a big burned out spot... mind you it was raining really hard. Wonder what it would have been like if it hit the transformer down the street.. now THAT would have been cool. Except of course no electricity.
